Geography

Intent

We aim to provide a high-quality geography education that inspires pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Implementation

EYFS

Basic geographical knowledge and skills are taught to children throughout their time in the Early Years based on the early learning goals (ELG’s) for Understanding the World. Children begin to explore key concepts and ideas based around the place where they live and familiar places and environments to them through continuous provision activities and facilitated adult led learning opportunities. They have opportunities through Forest School investigation to be inquisitive learners who begin to observe, notice and record geographical patterns and changes.

KS1 /KS2 (lower)

Children in KS1 and lower KS2 are taught through a 2-year cycle of topics. Geographical knowledge is taught alongside key skills using a wide range of resources including atlases, digital maps and aerial photographs. The curriculum is broadened through educational visits and school trips and children also continue to access Forest School.

Impact

Pupils will be able to understand key geographical concepts. They will have developed skills in asking and answering questions, problem solving, investigating and collecting data and making comparisons between locations. They will be curious and fascinated about the world in which they live and the skills that they learn within Geography are also used in other areas across the curriculum.
