PE Curriculum Statement

 Intent

At Rushton CE First School, we recognise the importance of physical education and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our physical education curriculum is to provide all children with high quality physical education and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging physical education lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferable life skills such as fairness and respect.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is varied and long-term plans ensure that we meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.  PE lessons are delivered by a qualified coach alongside the class teacher or a Teaching Assistant. During these sessions, children receive expert coaching to develop fundamental skills through a variety of activities and games suitable to their age.

Our PE curriculum is sequenced precisely to ensure progression of knowledge and skills, thus enabling children to build upon prior experiences and apply these fluently, with confidence. Children also have the opportunity to further these skills at morning and after school sports clubs.

Children take part in a range of invasion, striking and fielding, or net and wall games, we promote imagination and creativity in gymnastics and dance as well as provide opportunities for athletics using the outdoor environment plus outdoor and Forest School activities. Children in KS2 have a 12-week block of swimming lessons each year.

We use the ‘Daily Mile’ initiative, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day. We promote running around the track for lesson breaks and at playtimes to help improve stamina and fitness.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports out of school. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for physical activity and sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives using the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
