Curriculum Planner and Topic Webs

Our youngest children in school, the Nursery and Reception class is taught within the school’s Foundation Stage. The Early Years curriculum is based on the recommended ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Framework’.

The framework is delivered through topics and learning is purposeful and embedded through continuous provision and based around play.

EYFS – Hedgehog Class

In Hedgehog class we follow ‘In the Moment Planning’ which means that our learning is child led. We offer a wide range of resources that the children have continuous access to. This allows them to follow their own interests and enables us, as practitioners, to build on the teachable moments they come across in their exploration. Planning in this way enables our children to grow and develop into happy, engaged, resilient independent, and curious learners!

We continually assess and plan for each child on a moment-by-moment basis, responding to their interests and extending their learning. This ensures that we know exactly where they are on their learning journey.

As well as this, each week we have two or three focus children. During this week we will gather observations on these children to build a picture of their learning with us. This does not mean that the other children are not learning or getting adult interaction but that they are continuing with their own learning journeys independently, whilst we ensure that each child has equal opportunity for quality teaching and learning.

A week before a child is a ‘focus child’ a parent consultation sheet will be sent home to be completed. No one knows their children better than parents so we value all the knowledge that you can share with us. Together we will plan activities to meet a child’s needs both in the present time and for their future learning and development.

The children in Years 1 -4 are taught following the programmes of study as part of the National Curriculum.

The children in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) are taught together in small class sizes and our older children are taught together as lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4). The National Curriculum objectives are covered over two years through cross curricular topics.  Enrichment days and educational visits are also planned to enhance and consolidate learning in some topics.
